Biographical sketch of leo THASUN AMARASINGHE


As a proud son of mother Royal College, Leo Thasun Amarasinghe was elected as the president of the Leo Club of Homagama Central, District 306 C2 for the year 2007/2008. Leo Thasun was inducted as a Leo in 2006 as the 2nd Vice president of the Leo Club of Homagama Central. Leo Thasun was first selected to serve on the Leo District council during the year 2007/2008 as the Regional Director of the Region 7. Then in the year 2008/2009 he was selected as the project coordinator for District 306 C2. Leo Thasun won the Governor’s appreciation award two times in the year 2006/2007 and the International President’s Appreciation certificate in the year 2007/2008. Leo Thasun won the most outstanding regional director award and the most outstanding Leo Club president runner up award at the annual Leo District conference of 306 C2 in the same year. Leo Thasun achieved sufficient summit in his Leo career as well as, The Leo of the year in the Leo District 306 C2 in 2007/2008 and though the short period of well performing in community service for three years since 2006.

Thasun Amarasinghe also did well in his academic studies and co-curricular activities and he was elected to lead many societies like Wildlife Protection Society, Art Circle, Insurance Club, Sinhala Literacy, and Social Sciences Club etc…. as there chairman. As well as this Thasun became the editor of “The Royalist” magazine. In 1998, he became a member of the Young Zoologists; Association of the National Zoological Gardens, Sri Lanka. Since 1998 he has been organizing nature conservation camps, workshops, lectures and exhibitions to promote a strong awareness of the value of biodiversity conservation among Sri Lankan community.

In addition to these Thasun has given many lectures on snakes and amphibians for undergraduates and doctors. As a young herpetologist and a wildlife conservationist,
Thasun Amarasinghe achieved satisfactory results at his research activities on Agamid Lizards while discovering a new species to the science and becoming the youngest herpetologist in South-Asia. Thasun Amarasinghe is a taxonomist who has published over thirty research papers in international journals as well as he has presented his skills and enormous knowledge on herpetofauna many times at international symposiums and congresses. Now, Thasun is the Editor-in-chief of Taprobanica, the journal of South Asian Biodiversity. And also he is an Editorial Board Member of Herpetotropicos, the journal on Tropical Amphibians and Reptiles of the University of Los Andes; Venezuela in South America. Thasun is a key member of many international societies such as “Center for North American Herpetology, Amphibian Network of South Asia, South Asian Reptile Network, and Oriental Birds Club” etc….. Other than these, Thasun is a Crocodile Specialist of “Species survival commission” in the International Union of Conservation Nature.

By profession, he is the chairman of Taprobanica Nature Conservation, and Eco-tourism Group and he is currently final year student of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, the Open University of Sri Lanka.

Leo Thasun is the eldest child of Mr. N. Amarasinghe and Mrs. N. Tennakoon. He has two siblings, a brother and a sister.
Thasun Amarasinghe is a keen an enthusiastic person who has gathered an enormous knowledge and experience on social works.
